dvd review – IP MAN 2

Let me start this review with a disclaimer: I have not seen the first Ip Man movie. There are several reasons for me pointing this out from the get-go, not the least of which being that when I say, “Ip Man 2 is easily one of the best Donnie Yen movies I’ve ever seen,” I won’t be inundated with people asking me, “Better than the first Ip Man?” Honestly, I don’t know if Ip Man 2 is better than Ip Man. And when I say that Ip Man 2 is one of the best Donnie Yen movies I’ve ever seen, I’m not saying that it is the absolute best—just one of the best. Yen has been in some awesome movies, including Iron Monkey, Wing Chun and Hero, and for my money, Ip Man 2 ranks right up there with those films. (more…)

The Adventures of David Walker: Showdown at the Post Office

As many of you know, my life story consists of a series of bizarre circumstances and cases of me being in the wrong place at the wrong time. There was the time my car got fire-bombed. The time I walked into a drive-by shooting. The altercation at a Fatburger in Los Angeles where the police got called. Being escorted out of book festival when someone very vocally threatened to kill me. The multiple fights I’ve had to break up. Me stopping the drunk guy trying to rob a UPS truck. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. But yesterday’s encounter with insanity was the craziest of them all. (more…)

BAMF Interview Archives – Sherman Alexie

This installment of the BAMF Interview Archives features my 2002 conversation with acclaimed writer, poet and filmmaker Sherman Alexie. Best know for his novels and poetry, Alexie ventured into making his own film with The Business of Fancydancing, which at the time of our interview he had just started self-distributing. (more…)
